If you have a smaller bedroom, one of the first things we’d look at is how much space your existing furniture is actually taking up.
It’s very common for us to visit homes where a freestanding wardrobe fits reasonably well, but leaves unused space above it, beside it or between the wardrobe and the wall. You then have a chest of drawers elsewhere in the room and suddenly there isn’t much floor space left.
For smaller bedrooms in Great Yarmouth, a made-to-measure sliding wardrobe can be a very practical way of getting more storage without making the room feel overcrowded.
Why Sliding Doors Work Well in Smaller Bedrooms
The biggest advantage is straightforward: sliding wardrobe doors don’t open out into the room.
With a hinged wardrobe, you need enough clearance between the wardrobe and your bed or other furniture to open the door comfortably. In a smaller bedroom, that can dictate where everything else has to go.
Sliding doors move along their track instead, so that clearance isn’t required. If your bed needs to sit relatively close to the wardrobe, that alone can make sliding doors worth considering.
They do need to be slightly deeper than a hinged wardrobe to accommodate the sliding tracks, but in many compact bedrooms the floor space saved in front of the wardrobe is much more useful.
Use the Full Height and Width of the Room
When space is limited, we generally don’t want to waste any of it.
Our sliding wardrobes are made to measure rather than built around standard-sized units. That means we can design them to run wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling where appropriate, making use of space that a freestanding wardrobe would usually leave untouched.
This can be particularly valuable if you’re trying to avoid adding more furniture elsewhere in the bedroom.
Instead of thinking purely about where your clothes will hang, we can look at everything you need to store and design the interior around it. That might mean a combination of hanging rails, shelves and other storage arranged around your particular requirements.
Even bedrooms with awkward dimensions and sloping ceilings can often be accommodated because the furniture is being designed for the room rather than asking the room to fit the furniture.
Think About What You Actually Need to Store
This is probably the most important part of the design consultation.
There’s little benefit in giving you lots of hanging space if most of your clothes are folded. Likewise, if you own a lot of longer coats or dresses, we need to allow enough full-height hanging space.
We’d normally want to understand what is currently causing the storage problem before deciding how the wardrobe should be laid out.
The aim is not simply to fit the largest wardrobe possible into the room. It’s to make the available space work harder so that the rest of the bedroom can remain as clear and usable as possible.
Can Mirrored Sliding Doors Make a Small Bedroom Feel Bigger?
Mirrored doors can be particularly effective in a smaller room.
As well as giving you a full-length mirror without needing additional wall or floor space, the reflection can help the bedroom feel lighter and more spacious.
You don’t have to choose a completely mirrored wardrobe, though. We offer a wide choice of panels, glass, colours and finishes, so we can create something that suits both the room and your personal taste.
