Lavender essential oils for a peaceful nights sleep

This time of year roses are King of the flower kingdom, seen as the most romantic petal and stem combination, their sweet scent winning over hearts all over the land. Roses have been symbolic of love and romance since the times of the Ancient Greeks: according to the great myths, Aphrodite (the Goddess of Love) created roses. However, there’s another flower that has power that is often overlooked, a flower that should be used in bedrooms to ensure a good night’s sleep, keep away pests and create a calm, restful environment…  Lavender!

Sleeping Beauty

Lavender has been shown to improve sleep, both in helping to get to sleep and improving the quality of it too. Studies have found that lavender increases slow-wave sleeping, the deep sleep in which the heartbeat slows and muscles relax.

Put a few drops of lavender oil under your pillow, rub onto temples or use a room diffuser. Aromatherapy diffusers improve air quality and fill the room with the scents (and benefits) of essential oils. See our blog on gadgets for the bedroom that picks some favourite options.

Of course, bedrooms aren’t just for sleeping in, for most of us it’s where we keep our clothes too. Lavender kept in the wardrobe will keep your favourite outfits smelling fresh and will also deter moths and any other unwelcome guests! Whilst the scent is appealing to us, moths and bugs hate it, so a bag of dried lavender hung on a clothes rail, or a pouch of potpourri  in a drawer is a great way to avoid unwelcome bed(room)fellows.
