What You Can Learn from Mark Zuckerberg's Wardrobe

Posted on 01/02/2016

Mark Zuckerberg's wardrobe is famous. For years, the Facebook founder's grey t-shirt and jeans have been almost as recognisable as the man himself, but last week he posted a photograph on his favourite social media site giving us a sneak peak of the inside of his wardrobe in all its grey glory.

Mark Zuckerberg's Wardrobe

Oh, Mark. You're a laugh a minute. No wonder that photo got 1.2 million likes.

So, why does the sixth richest man alive fill his wardrobe with two shades of grey? When in 2014 someone finally realised that he'd worn the same clothes too often to be a coincidence, his answer was word-perfect:

"I'm in this really lucky position where I get to wake up every day and help serve more than one billion people, and I feel like I'm not doing my job if I spend any of my energy on things that are silly or frivolous about my life."

Clearly, when you're terribly successful and important you just aren't too bothered that you're living like a cartoon character. But some people think Zuckerberg is onto something. Barack Obama wears only blue or grey suits, because "I have too many other decisions to make", and Steve Jobs famously decided on a black turtleneck and jeans as his chosen uniform.

The capsule wardrobe movement is growing in popularity, and Zuckerberg is clearly among its followers. The idea is that you have one less decision to make, which means less time wasted, and less stress. Now, that makes sense when you're the leader of the free world or the CEO of a tech empire worth billions, but what about us mere mortals?

If you're looking for a way to declutter your wardrobe, then this is an extreme one - but it could save you money and time. You needn't 'do a Zuckerberg' and limit yourself to two shades of grey: cutting down to 100, 50, 30 items can make a change. If you want to give it a go, then why not try Project 333? The challenge is to try wearing only 33 items of clothing for three months.
