Spooky ghost looking out of a mirror

From vampires to ghosts, apparitions to murderous men, there are dozens of spooky stories and urban legends that involve mirrors. To celebrate Halloween and all the stranger things that happen this time of year we’ve rounded up our favourite mirror myths…

Bloody Mary

To play the classic childhood game of conjuring the ghost of Bloody Mary – who legend says was buried prematurely by her family and tried to claw her way out of her coffin – you must stand in a dark room and say into a mirror “Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary!” There are many legends around Bloody Mary, some say she will appear as a corpse, others as a witch or ghost and there is no agreement on whether she’ll be friendly or evil when she is summoned. There’s only one way to find out for sure – do you dare try to see her?

Candyman

Similar to Bloody Mary, the Candyman is an urban legend about the ghost of a slave who returns from the dead in search of revenge if you say his name five times in a mirror. When summoned, legend says he will appear behind you and kill you with a bloody hook that’s replaced his severed hand. The 1992 film popularised the myth and spurred on many more reported sightings of the scary figure as well as more variations on the game.

Ghost Portals

If you place two mirrors facing each other in a dark room, legend says you have created a ghost portal through which spirits can pass. However not all spirits will pass through, some may stay between the mirrors and decide to stay and haunt the room!

Seven Years Bad Luck

Most people have heard that breaking a mirror will cause seven years of bad luck, this superstition has evolved over thousands of years and dates back to when men first saw their reflections in water and believed that the image in the water was their soul and to endanger the reflection would harm the physical self. The Romans continued this superstition with the breaking of mirrors. As they believed that it took seven years for a life to renew, they said that the breaking of a mirror would curse whoever had last looked into it for seven years until the body would renew again. To break the curse, one could grind up the shards of broken mirror into powder so it could never reflect again, or they could bury the broken pieces by moonlight.
