Fitted Wardrobes: As Seen on The Great Interior Design Challenge

Posted on 25/02/2016

"This room has the gift of fitted storage," said interior stylist Sophie Robinson as she walked into the bedroom of a self-build house in South London.

Sophie Robinson is one of the judges of the BBC's The Great Interior Design Challenge. Now in its third season, the show puts wannabe interior designers to the test, challenging them to redecorate a room with a budget of £1,000 in just three days - and to the homeowner's brief. Whoever creates the least successful design goes home. Deciding who that should be are judges Sophie Robinson and interior architect Daniel Hopwood.

Fitted Wardrobes

In the first episode of the series, two of the designers incorporated fitted furniture. Frankie upholstered the fitted wardrobes in his room for his Japanese room scheme, while Jane created a simple Scandinavian-style bedroom and put bark handles onto her homeowner's fitted wardrobe to fit into the scheme.

Later in the series, another designer incorporated fitted furniture into their design. Craig's homeowners had a fitted wardrobe in their bedroom, which the judges described as 'a gift'.

"Actually, the bones of this room are rather good," said Sophie Robinson as she looked around the room, "It's light, it's got the gift of fitted storage. It just needs a bit more character, a bit more life put into it."

Craig used greys and burn oranges in his design scheme to create a sophisticated bedroom.

The judges often emphasise the importance of storage, especially in bedrooms, and have criticised designers who haven't considered the practicalities of storage in their finished rooms. Fitted furniture is a fantastic way of maximising the storage potential of any room, and they know to make the most of it.
